JPL Mission Design and Navigation

Scientific Research

Bhanu Kumar is a postdoctoral researcher in the mission design and navigation (MDNav) section at JPL. Bhanu is both a mathematician and an aerospace engineer by education and do things related to both. The job of the MDNav section at JPL is to design orbits and paths for spacecraft to follow to their destinations, and then once once the spacecraft is on its way there, to keep track of where it is actually going and make corrections using its thrusters if the spacecraft starts deviating from the planned route.

Bhanu will host a presentation and demonstration of spacecraft orbits using the chaotic “butterfly effect” to move around, and provide a very basic explanation of mathematical chaos.
